Book Shopping and Edible Cells!
Today we went to the library to "shop" for books by genre. Students are required to have a "Genre Bingo" by the end of the year. This means that they need to read and book talk 5 books of a different genre. Mrs. Raymond pulled books off of the shelves of the library and separated them by genre. Students went with their Books to Read list and found books that they might want to read according to genres. Don't forget that reading logs are due Tuesday and students must complete a book talk by May 1st.
In science today, we put together cells made from cake! It was very fun to see all of the edible materials that students came up with to represent the cell organelles. We worked in assigned groups and presented the representations of animal or plant cells to the class. Then we got to eat the cells! Yum! 6F has a science worksheet due tomorrow.
Welcome to Mrs. Follansbee's sixth grade home page! This is a spot where you can find lots of information about anything you need in 6F.

Today in 6F
Today in our class, we started with writing in our writer's notebooks. Students had the prompt, What would you do with a 200 pound duck?, since it's been so rainy! Mrs. Tidd had to cover for me during language arts because I was in a meeting. Students went over simple subjects and simple predicates and revision symbols. Mrs. Tidd met with my Tuesday group to touch base about their writing pieces.
After snack, my students went to Mr. Stokes for math and 6S came for reading. I collected reading logs and handed out new ones. These are due on Tuesday of next week. Next, we read aloud from The Last Book in the Universe. I handed back Main Idea quizzes and went over the correct answers. Then, students picked picture books to read on their own and summarize using the "Somebody Wanted But So" method. I took page numbers in their independent reading books.
After 6S left, 6F came in and did the same thing.
We had indoor recess and came back from lunch for science class. We hooked up the digital microscope and looked at some slides of various things.... very cool! Also, we looked at animations of cells and their parts on line. Students worked on an activity about cell structures and descriptions. I handed out a worksheet for homework. This is due Thursday for 6F, Wednesday for 6S. Students were reminded to bring in their materials for the edible cell models for tomorrow.
We had art and music this afternoon. We made the most of this rainy day!
